The CLUG project
The CLUG Project - “Certifiable Localisation Unit with GNSS” (#CLUGProject) was launched at the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency headquarters on January 15th2020.
This EU-funded project – thanks to the Horizon 2020 program – is based on the European satellite navigation system Galileo and on the EGNOS system (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service), which both improve the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) using the principle of differential GPS.
Combined with other sensors (inertial units or odometer), this new technology will significantly reduce the cost of equipment on board and along the infrastructure while promoting the development of a sustainable system for the European rail network.
This new approach will accelerate the development of ERTMS by improving all train locationbased services throughout Europe.
Among the associated benefits: improved customer information, traffic management optimisation… This ambitious 2-year project brings together a large and complete consortium of different partners comprising railway companies (SNCF, DB Netz and SBB), railway signalling industries (CAF and Siemens), navigation specialists (Airbus Defense & Space, Naventik, FDC), a research institute (ENAC) and a certification expert (Navcert). Ultimately, this project is the key enabling technology for the future-proof development of train digitalisation and automation.
Efficiency, punctuality and safety, this future train technology will respond to the increased mobility needs of all European travellers and offer them an improved customer experience.
